ADAPTIVE EXPERTISE: EFFICIENCY AND INNOVATION
ABSTRACT
Adaptive expertise is a complex and multi-dimensional concept. It includes cognitive, motivational components and personality traits based on which it is possible to explain the differences between the types of experts with regard to their capacity to transfer learning. The central objectives of the present study are: (i) to relate the concept of adaptive expertise to that of transfer of learning; (ii) to analyze the characteristics of educational experiences that facilitate the transfer in learning and, implicitly, the development of adaptive expertise. In this sense, we focus on one of the most relevant models in the contemporary field of adaptive expertise – the model of transfer of learning proposed by Schwartz, Bransford, & Sears (2005). Furthermore, we investigate the means of developing adaptive expertise, starting from its key dimensions – efficiency and innovation. More exactly, we analyze the empirical support that pleads in favor of using the method of preparing for future learning (PFL) as a means of building critical learning experiences with a view to developing adaptability. Although the number of studies in the educational field dedicated to adaptive expertise is relatively limited, we consider their results encouraging, which indicate that this concept must be explored carefully and thoroughly, as it can open up viable research directions.
