Abstract:

Emotions as patterns of appraisal and response seem to appear both across ontogeny and phylogeny. Their main function is to offer an assessment of the events the individual confronts with. The research literature concerning the development of the ability to have an emotional response highlights two important questions: 1) is the emotional response from the beginning of extra uterine life the result of an appraisal process? and 2) (concerning more the methodological aspects) what are the adequate behavioral and/or neurophysiologic markers that signals the presence of an emotional response in infants and toddlerhood? The present article summarizes the main findings of the last decades that could be a possible answer to these questions.
