It may seem that an article on theories - in any field of psychology - is far behind the purpose of current research. However, it is obvious that, as many scientists and philosophers have already pointed out, theories lead our way of doing research. In this context, it seems useful to know the previous theories of a given domain for at least two reasons: to avoid their reinvention and to guide our future investigations. This article tries to present some of the main theories and paradigms of cognitive development, hoping to give an overview of them and an image on the current status in the field, both for researchers and practitioners (e.g., educators).
