Abstract:

Under the notion "autobiographical memory" one can understand, in a non-restrictive manner, a memory structure that encompasses both narrative and imagery, thus providing us with a coherent personal history and contributing to the definition of self; its mechanisms are thought to emerge somewhere around 2.5-3 years. The insights that can be provided for the study of autobiographical memory by adult recollections of the earliest memory represent the focus of this study. The results point to generally sustained conclusions in literature (significance, uniqueness, emotional content, relationship to the concept of self) as well as to particular issues (age of first memory, context, emotional aspects). They are analyzed in the context of the reconstructive nature of autobiographical memory.
