WORKING MEMORY TRAINING IN TYPICAL AND ATYPICAL DEVELOPMENT: REVISITING THE EVIDENCE

Written by Alexandra M. SABOU, Magda MOLDOVAN, Andrada M. COSMA, Laura VISU-PETRA on . Posted in Volume XVI, Nr. 1

ABSTRACT

The review aims to integrate both pioneering and most recent studies attempting to enhance WM functioning in typically (children, young and older adults) and atypically developing individuals (with Down syndrome, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, or Learning Disabilities). Two general types of approaches are analyzed: strategy (domain specific, targeting a particular type of information, with limited transfer) and core training (domain-general, executive demanding, with high transfer potential). Where available, evidence regarding neural correlates, age-related effects and transfer potential is included. Finally, some suggestions are offered, pleading for an increased coherence in the field, especially at the levels of methodology, outcomes and targeted mechanisms of change.
